Homes in Santo Espírito preserved this feature almost intact for generations, even as other parishes in Santa Maria opted for simpler chimneys. Researchers in vernacular architecture note that barely a hundred well-preserved examples remain across the whole archipelago. This rarity partly explains the growing interest from buyers seeking something different from standardised housing.

Residents caught between pride and concern

For many residents of Santo Espírito, watching homes that had stood shut for years being restored is a source of satisfaction, though not everyone shares the same enthusiasm. Some older residents fear that a rise in outside buyers will end up transforming the parish's quiet character. Others, however, see the restoration wave as an opportunity for their children to return to the island and find decent housing without having to build from scratch. Local associations have begun holding information sessions on the paperwork needed to carry out this kind of work.

The Câmara Municipal rolls out targeted support

The Vila do Porto Câmara Municipal has introduced technical support schemes for owners wishing to restore homes with traditional chimneys, including advice on materials and specialist labour. Municipal officials say the aim is to prevent the market's revaluation from pushing out families who have lived in Santo Espírito for generations. There has also been talk of tax breaks for those who preserve the original elements of the façade. The council is also working with the Direção Regional da Cultura to catalogue the most representative examples.

A trend spreading to other parishes in Santa Maria

Interest in this type of housing is not confined to Santo Espírito: in Água de Alto and São Pedro, deals have also emerged for properties with similar features, albeit in smaller numbers. Local estate agents note that demand comes both from returning emigrants and from mainland buyers drawn to the distinctive character of these buildings. In the coming years, the trend is expected to become one of the main drivers of the residential market in Santa Maria's interior.
