San Bartolomé, Lanzarote's fastest-growing municipality, seeks to make room for hundreds of new residents each year

San Bartolomé, at the geographical heart of Lanzarote, has established itself in recent years as one of the island's fastest-growing municipalities in demographic terms, according to Istac figures. Its proximity to Arrecife, to the airport and to the island's main business parks has made it a regular destination for families looking to buy or rent somewhat more affordably than in the capital or along the tourist coast.

From farming village to commuter municipality

Municipal sources explain that San Bartolomé, traditionally tied to vine growing around La Geria, has gradually turned part of its developable land into new residential areas, particularly in the town centre itself and in nearby settlements such as Playa Honda, on the coast. That growth, they note, is largely driven by families who work in Arrecife or in the tourist south and who have found a more affordable housing alternative in the municipality.

Services lagging behind growth

According to property sector sources, housing demand in San Bartolomé has grown faster than the municipality's ability to provide new services: schools, health centres and public transport have not always kept pace with new residential developments. Residents' groups are calling on the town council and the Cabildo of Lanzarote to plan new housing hand in hand with that infrastructure, to prevent the municipality from becoming a mere dormitory town with no services of its own.

Growth that shows no sign of slowing

Municipal sources expect demographic pressure on San Bartolomé to persist in the coming years, so long as housing prices keep rising in Arrecife and along the tourist coast, and the municipality continues to offer a combination of moderate prices and good connections with the rest of the island.
