For generations, Ribeirinha has been one of Faial's parishes with the strongest tradition of emigration to the United States and Canada, which explains why a large share of its housing stock now belongs to families living outside the island. Many of these houses stay shut for most of the year, waiting for their owners to visit during the summer holidays. This situation significantly reduces the supply available to young people who do want to settle permanently in the parish.

Several young people from Ribeirinha say that, unable to find housing at a reasonable price, they end up moving to Horta or leaving the island altogether in search of opportunities. Some say they would rather stay close to their families and the cliff-lined coast they value so highly, but that there are no real rental options or support for building a home of their own on family land. The lack of available developable land compounds the high cost of transporting materials to the parish.

The parish council calls for a regional response

The parish council has told the Regional Government of the Azores of the need to set up soft-credit lines specifically for young people wanting to renovate inherited homes or build on family land, mirroring programmes already in place in other rural parishes of Faial. It has also proposed exploring ways to temporarily hand over houses shut up by emigrants in exchange for their upkeep, although owning families are not always willing to give up the use of their properties.

Scenic appeal that isn't translating into investment

Although Ribeirinha's cliff-lined coast is among the most highly regarded in Faial for its scenery, this appeal has barely translated into new property investment, since the area's low tourist pressure fails to generate the same interest seen in parishes closer to Horta. Developers consulted acknowledge that building in Ribeirinha remains a poor investment as long as there is no stable demand to justify the initial outlay.
